DAY 2: The Air Up There

Activity 1: Bee Informed [4 points]

Unbee-lievable Facts about Bumblebees!

To earn full points for this activity you must type all five sentences and then fill in the blanks for each one. Post the completed sentences on your blog.
1. The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word ‘bumble’ means to drone.
2. Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometres per hour (km/h).
3. Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to 90 percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.
4. Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to   50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.
5. The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the removal of wildflowers and flowering trees, habitat loss, and extensive use of pesticides.

Activity 2: Carbon Sinks Don’t Stink! [4 points]

On your blog, list all of the foods that you would put in your special draining sink.

If I had to design my own sink and put disgusting food into the sink I will tell you down below.

1. Left over unused vegetables or fruits

2. Rotted fruits and foods

3. Mouldy bread

Those are the main three but I have more. Comment what disgusting things you would put down the sink.

Activity 3: Flying Fungi [10 points]

On your blog, tell us how you would solve this tricky maths problem. Be sure to also post your final answer in days or weeks.

Here is what I think.

  1. Talofa Tufui,

Ka pai, you have used the correct words to fill the gaps, I can tell you read the article very carefully. Just a note your first statement is missing a few words, bumble means to 'hum, buzz, or drone'. Please add the rest to your post.

I like that you have listed some actual foods that should go down the the sink. You have thought about using your special draining sink in a very practical way, which is great. I like to give bread that has gone bad to the birds, but I would definitely put rotten food down a draining sink if I had one!

You have given two answers to the word problem, both answers are correct, well done. However the activity asks that you tell us how you solve this problem, so please edit your post to tell us how you solved this problem. I will be happy to award you full points for this activity once you have done this.

Did you use multiplication to solve the problem? If you did, perhaps start writing each step you took.

I look forward to reading your edited post. :)

    Toe feiloa'i fo'i,

    Cia.
