DAY 2: Fabulous Flora

Activity 1: Weaving a Tall Tale…[4 points]

On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?
I would like to try flax weaving because it looks so unique and cool. Does it interest me? Actually it does because I never knew that you can use flax as something you can weave with.

Activity 2: Mighty Mangroves [4 points]

On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?

I chose my mum and dad because they are so strong and tough. In my opinion they are so strong and tough because when ever we have family situation they are still strong and they never give up. They are tough because they always have to put up with me and my siblings all the time so I thank them for everything!

Activity 3: Stranger than Fiction [10 points + 5 possible points]

On your blog, list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose. To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog.

Rafflesia Arnoldii

rafflesia arnoldii

Corpse Flower

corpse flower

Three similarities about Raffelesia Arnoldii & Corpse Flower is that obviously they are plants. They both grow up to the size of three feet. Lastly they are known as one of the strangest plants in the world.

Three differences about Raffelesia Arnoldii & Corpse Flower is that they both look different, they smell different and they don't have the same names.

WEEK 2: Water, Water, Everywhere

DAY 1: Swimming with the Fish

Activity 1: Surfs Up! [4 points]

On your blog, post a picture of yourself doing one of your favourite summer activities. Below the picture tell us what the activity is and tell us why it is one of your favourites.
Here is a photo of me when I was younger and one of the activity that I like to do when its Summer is Swimming. I like swimming when its summer because summer is a hot season and I can go swimming in the pool. Also you can go swimming with your family and play around and just have fun!!!

Activity 2: The Great Taupo Cycle Challenge [4 points]

On your blog, list the three people you would like to have on your Lake Taupo Cycle Race Support Crew. Tell us why you have chosen each person.
If it was me, I would choose my dad, Daryl, as one of my supporters because he is always supportive and he would always tell us to never give up. He is also very kind. I would also take my mum, Tufui, as one of my supporters because she is always there when we need her and she is very supportive and kind. Lastly I would take my brother, Minerva, as one of my supporters because he is smart, sporty and is very supportive.

Activity 3: Something Smells Fishy…[10 points]

On your blog, write out each fact and in CAPITAL LETTERS beside the fact, write the word ‘TRUE’ if it is a true fact or ‘FALSE’ if it is not true.

Fish Fact #1: FALSE - I think it is false because I don't think a fish can live that long.
Fish Fact #2: TRUE - I think it is true because sharks do have eyelids.
Fish Fact #3: TRUE - I think it is true because it has fish in its name also because it lives in the ocean.
Fish Fact #4: TRUE - I think it is true because when I was watching programme about fishes I heard the fishes moans.
Fish Fact #5: FALSE - I think it is false because I have never heard that name used for fish swimming together in groups.

Thanks Summer Learning Journey Team!

DAY 5: Blink and You’ll Miss It

Activity 1: Towering Timbers [4 points]

On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.

Should logging be allowed in New Zealand? No and I will explain why. In my first reason I don't like logging because back in the days there were a lot of trees and forests. But now there isn't that much trees and forest in New Zealand because people are cutting them down. My second reason about logging is that once people chop off trees then there will be no more trees to release good oxygen for us to breath in.

Activity 2: Living on the Edge [4 points]

On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.
Dear Luseane Malakai, (http://wpsluseanem.blogspot.com/)
Guess what Luseane? I went to the Tundra for a trip and it was a boost.
It was really fun and exciting because I got to do sorts of things like trying out their foods.
I learnt that there are three tundra biome animals named Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Lemming and more.
Also another interesting fact about tundra is about their plants. Plants that grow in the tundra include grasses, shrubs, herbs, and lichens. They grow in groups and stay low to the ground to stay protected from the icy winds. They tend to have shallow roots and flower quickly during the short summer months. Maybe one day you should go out for an trip!

Activity 3: Going, going….gone [10 points]

On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.
In 2018 my life in New Zealand was awesome. New Zealand is the place where you want to go to spend time with your families. If you were up on the mountains looking down then you can see that New Zealand has a lot of nice views. Lastly New Zealand doesn't really have any dangerous animals. Like snakes.

DAY 4: More than Meets the Eye

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights [4 points]

On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.

What I would want to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life is:
What this you dream when you were growing up?
How did you feel when you reached the top of Mt Everest?
What was the most challenging thing you were going through while you were climbing up the mountain?
What inspired him to become a mountain climber?
How long did it take to reach the top of Mt Everest?

Activity 2: Pancakes and Maple Syrup? [4 points]

For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.

My favourite food is Butter Chicken and today I will tell you how to make Butter Chicken.

Step 1:
Pace yogurt, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, garam masala, and chili powder in a glass or ceramic dish. Add chicken. Stir to coat. Cover. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Step 2:
Heat oil and butter in a heavy-based saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until softened. Add chicken mixture to pan. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until chicken just starts to change colour. Add tomato puree and stock. Cover. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until chicken is tender and mixture has thickened slightly.

Step 3:
Stir in cream. Simmer for a further 5 minutes or until heated through. Serve with steamed rice and coriander leaves.

Activity 3: Salt and Pepper [5 + 5 possible bonus points]

On your blog tell us where you would build your hotel and what you would use to build it. For an extra five points, use Google Drawings to design one room in your hotel. You can also use a paper and pencil to draw your room, take a picture of the drawing, and post it on your blog.

If I had my own hotel then I would build on the beach. If I had a hotel then I will build it with soft wood.

WEEK 1 DAY 3: Awesome Animals

Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts [4 points]

On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.
My beast looks like a round squishy ball. It likes to eat sweets such as candy. Whenever someone pulls out a piece of candy my round beast/creature will spin as fast as flash just to eat the candy. As soon as my creature snatches your piece of candy you will jump up with such a big shock. My animal is kind and gentle but whenever he wants something it is selfish. My creature/beast feels furry and soft like a pillow. My creature/beast sounds like bird singing a song. Does it have any talons or claws? Yes indeed my creature/beast has claws and it is sharp like a knife.

Activity 2: The Secretive Skink [4 points]

On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.
Pros - Good things
Con - Bad things
1. In my opinion the pro about being a DOC Ranger is because you get to explore and see new and interesting reptiles or animals.
2. You can also learn and know more about them and where they come from.
3. Lastly whenever the reptiles or animals need help your there whenever they need you.

1. In my opinion the con thing about being a DOC Ranger is that sometimes the animals or reptiles might hurt you.
2. Also the con thing about being a DOC Ranger is that you don't really get to spend much time with your family.
3. Lastly the con thing about being a DOC Ranger is that what if there are people who actually don't take care of the reptiles or animals properly.

Do I want to be a DOC Ranger?
No because I have two dreams that I want to try and reach once I'm older. One of them is to be a hairdresser. The other is to be a zookeeper.

Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund [10 points]

Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:
1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.
2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.
3) What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are trying to help the Freshwater Seals by building them snowbanks. The WWF are building snowbanks because if the seals give birth in a lair it digs into a snow bank. If there aren't any snowbanks then the pups are born on open ice which isn't good because they have no protections against predators and cold. Up to half of the pups could die. So that's why WWF builds snowbanks for the pups to be born.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are trying to save the tigers and are changing the worlds opinion.

Emotional Day

Hello Bloggers yesterday was the end of school for 2018. It was a really emotional day because the year 6's and the year 5's were crying saying goodbye to each other. I was really sad because I was one of the year 6's and I was leaving Wesley primary School. I was also sad because some of my Best Friends are going to another Intermediate. Sometimes its hard to say goodbye. And I was so sad because a coupe of my Best Friends that were year 5's weren't at school so I never got to say goodbye. By the way I really miss them and I hope in the future I will see them again!

DAY 2: Forest Life

Activity 1: Giants Among Us [4 points]

It will be great if I got to meet Tane Mahuta in real life because I want to see if he is like other Kauri Trees which are starting to get extinct right now. I want to meet Tane Mahuta because I want to see how tall it is and see if birds are living with him.

I don't want to meet Tane Mahuta because what if I carry a bit of soil in my shoes and then it spreads to other Kauri Trees and they might die.

Activity 2: Fabulous Ferns [4 points]

1. Black Ferns
2. Silver Ferns
3. Black Ferns

My favourite was the Silver Ferns outfit because it shows the fern and it looks really comfortable and easy to run in during the game.

Activity 3: Weird and Wonderful [10 points]
I had to work out a problem and the question was:
365 times 3 and I got 1095 here is a photo of me working it out on a paper.

Thank you for checking out my blog (Summer Learning Journey)

Summer Learning Journey - Day 1

Activity 1

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]

Firstly I chose my first fact which was: New Zealand's official language is English and Maori. The reason why I chose this fact is because I thought only one country has only one language.
Secondly I chose my second fact which was: The Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa. Aotearoa means the land of the long white cloud. I chose this fact because I thought that Aotearoa means New Zealand but it didn't. It really shocked me because I didn't know that.
Thirdly I chose this fact: Out of all of the countries New Zealand is one of the least populated countries with over 4 million populations. I chose this fact because it is really interesting that we are one of the countries that have a least population.

Activity 2

Activity 2: North and South [4 points]

Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post. What I found special and interesting about where I live (Auckland) is that it is a caring and loving community. Even though it is a small community but we stand up for each others backs and I really do want more people to come and live here in Auckland. You may think that Auckland is a bad place but it is actually not. Auckland is the perfect place to relax and travel.

Here is my digital footprint on how to stay safe and smart whenever you are online.
Make sure to always post positive things if you are online.
Remember no gang signs because other people might not know what signs those are.
And remember once you post something you can't get rid of it.

My Waka Ride

Dear Mum & Dad

I hope you have found this letter to tell you that I am still alive and so that you don't need to worry about me.

I have been going through the sea in a Waka for months and months. Once I get back I will tell you some stories about my journey on the Waka.

Our Captain Underpants unfortunately passed away. No one even knows what to do because we are just learners. We have myself and five other ship members on board of our tiny Waka.

Some of our journey through the sea was kind of scary because there was a big black shark trying to eat us and one of our ship member was scared that his fake teeth fell out.

I have more stories to tell you but I don't want to spoil the news.

So catch you later Mum & Dad!

Summer Learning Journey

What is your favourite things to do in summer?

My favourite things to do in summer is to go on a vacation because I need a break from learning at school. At the time right now I like to go outside and play AFL and when it is time for a break I like to relax under the trees because it is shady and cool.
